Maintain Learning Momentum During The Summer Months
Even if your family doesn’t opt for summer tutoring services this year, there are plenty of steps you can take to ensure your student has a worthwhile break from school and continues a positive trajectory of learning outside of the classroom. Without further ado, here is a compilation of summer learning tips that both students and parents can undertake this summer season.
» Schedule A Parent-Teacher Meeting:
Before or after registration for the new school year, contact your student’s school to see if it is possible to arrange a meeting with a teacher of your student’s grade level. During the meeting, be sure to ask the teacher how your student can come prepared for the next grade and what to expect from the curriculum.
» Make Reading A Daily Activity:
Encourage daily summer reading and set a positive example by having your child/student see you read everyday. Unlike assigned books in school, recommend reading material that interests your student and gets them excited about the activity. Also, switching off reading to each other will build confidence if your student struggles with confidence when reading aloud.
» Ask Your Student About Colleges, Careers, + Other Goals:
It’s never too early or too late to ask your student what they want to be when they grow up. Students are more likely to pursue higher education if they come from a household in which talking about college and university as well as academic and career goals is normalized.
» Stay Physically Active:
Did you know that students are two or three times more likely to gain weight over summer vacation? Keep in mind that in order for your student to feel confident and well-rounded inside and outside of the classroom, they need to be healthy. Plan hikes, bike rides, and other outings to ensure your student is getting the physical exercise they need.
» Go Outside + Experience The Great Outdoors:
In relation to outings for exercise, it’s important to take advantage of the summer weather and outdoor resources your neighborhood, city, or region has to offer. The Great Outdoors offers a bounty of learning opportunities–from local climates and habitat to Native dwellers, flora, and fauna in your area. You can even plan a camping trip to build your child’s confidence by teaching them survival skills!
» Create A Summer Project:
Is there something in particular that your child/student is advocating for lately? Perhaps they want to redecorate their room or adopt a puppy. Turn this into a passion project for your student by having them conduct research, create a budget, and design a specific aspect of their goal. This will get your child excited about learning and show them that it can be fun and rewarding.
» Plan Group Activities:
For middle schoolers and high schoolers, many students want to spend their free summer vacation time with friends. In this case try arranging weekly group gatherings that are focused on learning a new concept, reading, or completing a useful task using problem-solving skills.
» Develop A Reward System:
Many students need an incentive to keep learning when they are out of the classroom before they realize it can be fun and align with their interests. Come up with a reward system that allows your child to accrue points or “dollars” for completed tasks, projects, and daily reading. Then come up with fun excursions or prizes that your student can save their points up for.
» Find Fun Ways To Practice With Numbers + Math:
More often than not, students struggle with math. To strengthen your student’s understanding of math concepts and keep them in practice, have them add up the grocery bill at the supermarket, follow a recipe, or calculate time by creating a schedule or itinerary for a summer outing. If it’s conducive to your child’s learning style, there are plenty of math workbooks and worksheets you can access online for free.
» Encourage Creativity Via Arts + Crafts:
Because students don’t have as much time during the school year to make art and be creative, encourage your child to start art projects of any scope this summer. This will develop your child’s creativity and problem-solving skills while also providing a fun activity for the long summer days.
» Complete A Summer Science Project:
Whether it’s building a volcano, growing a garden, collecting local plants and leaves, or even playing with magnets, there is science all around us. You can find a plethora of fun science projects online and facilitate the process of progress throughout the summertime to diversify your students’ activities.
» Take A Trip To A Museum Or Library:
Appeal to your student’s interests by taking them to a museum that pertains to subjects that excite them. From natural history, bugs and insects, and space travel to art and ocean life, visiting a museum is the perfect outing that encourages learning outside of the classroom. Trips to the public library can also be a fun summer outing in which you encourage your child to find books about their innate interests!
