10th Grade English Tutoring
English courses in the second year of high school continue to build on the curriculum from ninth grade. Students are taught more sophisticated grammar rules and learn to vary their writing using different types of phrases to convey more nuanced meanings. New vocabulary is introduced and literature will vary with poetry, novels, dramas, etc. Students are expected to be able to produce well-developed essays and research papers.
Writing skills include:
- » Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
- » Write informative texts to convey complex ideas and concepts clearly through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
- » Strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant.

Students will continue to read and comprehend literature and nonfiction independently and proficiently.
- » Determine central idea or theme of a text and analyze its development.
- » Analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events.
- » Evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text.
- » Analyze how complex characters evolve over the course of a text.
Students will also continue to develop language skills, including:
- » Master language skills including conventions of standard capitalization, punctuation and spelling.
- » Use various forms of phrases (noun, verb, adjectival, adverbial, participial, propositional, absolute) and clauses (independent, dependent, noun, relative, adverbial) to add variety and interest to writing.
- » Increase vocabulary knowledge by determining or clarifying the meaning of unknown or multiple-meaning words and phrases.
- » Use context as a clue to determine the meaning of a word or phrase.
- » Demonstrate understanding figurative language and word relationships.
