11th Grade English Tutoring
Many 11th grade English courses will focus on American and/or contemporary literature. Students will be expected to have high-level analytical skills, focusing on building an understanding of social, political and historical times that influenced the literature. In the third year of high school, some students will be in AP English with very demanding and high expectations in terms of the comprehension of literature and level of writing and language use.
- » Read and analyze a variety of literature from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
- » Read informational texts about the writers and the historical times during which the literature was written.
- » Analyze the effect of history on literature.
- » Cite strong textual evidence to support analysis.
- » Determine themes or central ideas of text or literature.
- » Analyze how the author’s choices contribute to the story’s overall structure and meaning.

Students will continue to develop advanced writing capacities:
- » Write strong analyses and critiques of texts and issues in American literary history.
- » Use valid reasoning while supplying relevant and sufficient evidence.
- » Point out strengths and limitations of claims.
- » Conduct research projects.
- » Continue to develop a formal style and objective tone in writing.
Language skills will continue to develop, demonstrating a strong command of English grammar and usage in both writing and speaking.
- » Strong command of standard English conventions, including capitalization, punctuation and spelling.
- » Understand use of hyphenation.
- » Develop strategies to determine or clarify meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases.
- » Interpret figures of speech in context and analyze their role in the text.
Our professional English tutors are able to assist students with the challenging aspects of 11th grade English courses. Tutors will assist students in comprehending books, coming up with ideas for and then developing strong written essays, understanding new grammatical rules, and increasing vocabulary. Tutors will also help AP students prepare for the AP Language and Composition test that is offered toward the end of the school year. Students who pass this test will earn college credit for an introductory course in rhetoric and writing.
