12th Grade English Tutoring
The final year of high school is all about transitions, with many looking toward higher education after graduation. Twelfth grade English courses offer a place for students to reflect on their personal transition through the study of arts and literature as well as to continue developing advanced writing skills. In the final year of high school, some students will be in AP English with very demanding and high expectations in terms of the comprehension of literature and level of writing and language use.
In terms of writing, students will be expected to demonstrate advanced skills in formulating and composing essays and projects.
- » Write arguments to support claims in analyses of substantive topics or texts.
- » Use varied words, phrases and clauses as well as varied syntax.
- » Maintain an objective tone in writing.
- » Produce concluding statements or sections that supports the argument that has been presented.
- » Write informative texts to study and convey complex ideas and concepts clearly.
- » Produce a thesis statement to introduce a topic, and organize ideas and concepts so each element builds on the one that precedes it.
- » Strengthen writing with planning, revising, editing or rewriting.

Although assigned literature will vary from school to school, it is not uncommon for students to be focused on British literature during their senior year as well as other well known classic books.
- » Determine themes or central ideas of a text.
- » Analyze the impact of the author’s choices.
- » Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, and analyze the impact of specific word choices.
- » Analyze multiple interpretations of a story drama or poem (such as recorded or live production of a play or recorded novel or poetry), evaluating how each version interprets the source text.
- » By the end of 12th grade, independently read and comprehend literature at the high end of text complexity.
Seniors in high school will be college ready by graduation in terms of mastering advanced language standards.
- » Demonstrate strong command of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
- » Use reference materials to resolve issues with usage of complex or contested words, phrases and clauses.
- » Demonstrate mastery of English capitalization, punctuation and spelling, including learning hyphenation standards.
- » Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown or multiple-meaning words and phrases.
- » Understand figurative language, word relationships and nuances in word meanings.
Professional English tutors at Synergy Academics will assist students in working through complex literature and coursework, as well as in producing excellent essays and written reports.. Additionally, students in 12th grade AP English will be preparing for the AP English Literature and Composition exam, offered at the end of the school year. Passing this exam will earn the students college credit for an Introductory English course. This test uses multiple choice questions and free response prompts to test students’ skills in literary analysis of prose and verse texts. Our tutors are equipped to work closely with AP English students to help them prepare for this test.
