9th Grade English Tutoring
In the first year of high school English, students will develop reading analysis skills in both information and literary texts. They will also develop writing, research, and listening and speaking skills. Assigned literature will vary by school, but the general Common Core standards will ensure that students develop a foundation of skills that enables them to successfully move on to the next year of English.
Students will be expected to write in a way that accurately responds to prompts and demonstrates understanding of literature or other reading assignments. Some courses will also include research projects. Writing skills will include:
- » Analyze and understand prompts.
- » Construct essays with understanding of correct structure.
- » Format paragraphs.
- » Write literary analysis essays, stating a claim and backing it up with evidence.
- » Research a topic, gather information from a variety of sources, then write an argument based on research.

Students will read a variety of books, including non-fiction, short stories and novels. Courses will focus on developing comprehension skills, including:
- » Read and analyze literature independently.
- » Determine the theme of the book.
- » Analyze how characters change as the plot unfolds.
- » Explore the motives of the author.
- » Determine the author’s point of view.
- » Compare and contrast sources when doing a research project.
Students will further develop their writing skills and their language comprehension:
- » Develop understanding of figurative language, word relationships and nuances in word meanings.
- » Develop skills to determine the meaning of unknown words or phrases in context.
- » Expand use of language and its conventions when reading, writing or speaking.
