Middle School English Tutoring
Students in grades 6 through 8 will be encouraged to expand their use of critical thinking and analysis. They will be more effective in expressing themselves and will be able to more independently collaborate with other students. They will continue to develop their language and writing skills and engage in writing that involves research and technology.
Sixth grade: A professional tutor can help your student transition to middle school and be successful in sixth grade English by working on these and other parts of the curriculum:
- » Literature ➝ Cite evidence to support analysis of what the text says, determine theme or central idea and provide a summary of the text, determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, explain how the author develops a point of view.
- » Writing ➝ Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and evidence, use wording to clarify the relationships among claims, establish and maintain a formal writing style.
- » Language ➝ Understand rules of pronouns, use punctuation to set off parenthetical elements, increase command of English capitalization, punctuation and spelling, vary sentence patterns for meaning and style.

- » Literature ➝ Cite evidence to support analysis and draw inferences from text, determine theme or central idea, determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.
- » Writing ➝ Write arguments to support claims with clear reasoning and relevant evidence, use words, phrases and clauses to create clear, cohesive arguments, establish a formal style, provide a concluding statement that supports the argument.
- » Language ➝ Distinguish between simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentences, correctly place phrases and clauses within a sentence, learn correct rules for comma use to separate coordinate adjectives.
Eighth grade: Students will be expected to read and understand grade-appropriate literature and text. Writing will include argumentative, informative, narrative and research essays. A professional tutor can help your student comprehend challenging literature as well as improve writing and increase understanding of language rules and knowledge of vocabulary and spelling.
- » Literature ➝ Determine theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development throughout the text, analyze how dialogue or incidents in a story propel the action or reveal aspects of a character, analyze how differences in the points of view of the characters create effects throughout the text.
- » Writing ➝ Introduce claims and then distinguish from alternative and opposing claims, support claims with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, develop well thought out and thorough essays and reports.
- » Language ➝ Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking, form/use verbs in active and passive voice, use punctuation to indicate a pause or break (comma, ellipsis, dash).
