Kindergarten
Students will begin the study of social science with concepts based on their experiences from families and communities, exploring concepts of good citizenship, national symbols, geography, time and chronology, and life in the past.

First Grade
At this age, students will learn more about the world they live in, choices they make, and their responsibilities to others. They are ready for new geographic learning and a deeper understanding of chronology. They will also begin to develop a deeper understanding of cultural diversity and appreciate people from various backgrounds.

Second Grade
Students are ready to learn about people who make a difference in their own life and who have made a difference in the past. They learn about families today and in the past, how government works, and what makes someone heroic.

Third Grade
Students will focus on continuity and change in their own communities, building on their knowledge of geography, civics, historical thinking, chronology, and national identity. The emphasis will be on understanding how some things change and others remain the same. They will also learn about American Indians who lived and perhaps continue to live in their local region. Additionally, there will be a focus on understanding citizenship, the basic structure of government, and civic engagement.

Fourth Grade
The curriculum for fourth graders revolves around the history of California. Students will learn about the rich ethnic, social and cultural diversity of the state. Instruction will begin with learning about American Indians who lived here before the Europeans arrived, then studying the waves of immigrants from the sixteenth century up to modern times, with a focus on California missions, the Mexican War for Independence, the Gold Rush and statehood.

Fifth Grade
During the final year of elementary school, students will be introduced to United States history, including the development of the nation with an emphasis on the period up to 1800. The material is expansive, including the land and people before Columbus, age of European exploration, cooperation and conflict with American Indians, and settling the colonies, culminating with rebellion against Great Britain, the American Revolution, and the development of the Constitution.
