Why Learn A New Language

There are many benefits to students learning to speak a foreign language. It will boost their prospects for success whether in college or in the workforce. Students become better communicators and have an increased sense of confidence and achievement. It has also been shown that people who speak two or more languages have stronger problem-solving skills, as well as improved memory, concentration and mental abilities. Finally, in the multicultural, global world we live in, learning a new language increases a person’s ability to communicate with people from other cultures and countries as well as gives them advantages in their academic and professional future.

When is the Best Time To Learn A New Language

The truth is that the best time to learn a second language is when children are as young as possible. Children raised in bilingual homes generally are easily able to learn both languages. Referred to as simultaneous acquisition, when children are raised bilingually from birth or a second language is introduced before age three, they will go through the same developmental stages as a child learning one language. However, most families speak just one language in the home so children will learn a second language as part of their education. Some schools offer foreign language instruction as young as elementary school, but many students will not start until middle or high school.

Learning A Foreign Language

Whether your student begins studying a foreign language early in elementary school or not until they get to high school, one aspect remains true. The most important factors for success are to keep up with the work and practice often, everyday if possible. Learning a new foreign language at its core primarily involves acquiring and memorizing vocabulary, understanding sentence structure, understanding verb conjugation, and learning to communicate conversationally.

Oral presentations and being able to converse in the language are very important factors. Many foreign language teachers will only speak that language in the classroom, forcing the students to pay close attention and immerse themselves in the new foreign language from day one. For some people, mastering a new language comes quite easily but for others it is very difficult. If you notice your child slipping behind and getting frustrated in the class, it’s important to intervene as soon as possible. Learning a new foreign language is like building blocks, with one lesson building on the one before. So if students are struggling early on, it can be difficult to keep up.

Honors and Advanced Placement Foreign Language

Students who continue in their foreign language courses beyond the third year in high school will be at the Honors and/or AP level. There is a Language and Culture AP test offered for French and Spanish. Additionally, here is a Literature and Culture AP test offered in Spanish. Since Spanish has two separate AP tests, students who wish to take both will generally take one in their junior year and one in their senior year. Finally, there is also an AP test offered for Latin. Passing a foreign language AP test can earn students college credit and help them meet any foreign language requirements that may exist at the college or university they attend.
