Certified Professional Elementary School Math Tutoring
In grades K-2, math instruction focuses on concepts and skills involved in addition and subtraction, using strategies for the functions, applied to solving a variety of problems. They will also memorize all sums of two 1-digit numbers.
Kindergarten will generally cover:
- » Numeral recognition.
- » Fluently add and subtract through 5.
- » Use objects to represent two quantities and compare them → for example, there are more of one shape than another.
In first grade, lessons will be expanded to:
- » Fluently add and subtract through 10.
- » Solve addition and subtraction problems → 2+5, 9-4, 3+3, 4-4
- » Use math drawings to support conceptual understanding.

Students in 2nd grade will be expected to memorize basic mathematical equations and learn functions with double digits up to 100:
- » Know by memory all sums of two one digit numbers.
- » Add/subtract within 100 (with strategies).
- » Simple word problems → Use math drawing to solve the problem and explain answer..
In grades 3-5, the focus shifts to multiplication and division of whole numbers and understanding fractions. Students learn strategies for completing these calculations and will also memorize all products of two 1-digit numbers. Since mathematical concepts build upon one another, it is important to hire a professional tutor early if you feel your student is struggling in math so that he/she can be successful in the classroom, do well on quizzes and exams, and be prepared by the end of the school year to advance to the next level of math.
Third grade students will focus on multiplication:
- » Fluidly multiply and divide within 100.
- » Know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
- » Use a variety of models to represent and develop understanding of fractions → circles, squares, rectangles, number lines.
By 4th grade students will be improving skills in solving all mathematical operations as well as working with fractions and decimals, measurements and basic geometry:
- » Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers up to 1,000,000 using the standard algorithm.
- » Multiplication by 10s, 100s, 1000s.
- » Multi digit multiplication and division.
- » Understanding fractions → equivalent, common denominators, adding/subtracting, mixed numbers.
Mathematics courses in 5th grade include writing and interpreting numerical expressions and analyzing patterns and relationships. Students will continue to practice multi-digit multiplication and division as well as work with fractions and decimals:
- » Write and interpret numerical expressions that include parentheses, brackets or braces.
- » Multi-digit multiplication and division with and without decimals.
- » Add/subtract fractions & mixed numbers → common denominators, unlike denominators.
- » Geometry concepts including working with axes and number lines.
