Calculus is the mathematics of change, dealing with areas and volumes, rates of change, the orbits of planets and infinite sequences. Precalculus, generally taken in junior or senior year of high school, includes subjects and skills that are needed to understand calculus. The course generally covers topics in algebra, such as polynomial, rational, and exponential functions as well as conic sections. It also incorporates trigonometry concepts such as the Law of Sines and cosines, as well as analytic geometry and calculus concepts such as limits, derivatives, and integrals. It prepares students for the study of calculus by covering advanced mathematical topics that may have not been studied in earlier algebra, trigonometry, or geometry courses.
The material covered includes:
- » Functions and graphs → domain, range, symmetry, intercepts, asymptotes
- » Polynomials, Rational Functions
- » Logs and Exponents
- » Triangle Trigonometry → find missing sides and angles of triangles
- » Vectors → add, subtract, find product, find angle between two vectors
- » Conics → investigate parabolas, circles, ellipses and hyperbolas
- » Complex numbers → add, subtract, multiply and divide

Precalculus helps students prepare for the study of Calculus, which some will take in high school and others not until college. While understanding the Precalculus curriculum can be challenging for some students, it is important to be able to master the concepts and stay on track with the coursework as the class progresses. Our math tutors will work with your students to fully understand these new concepts and keep up with the challenging coursework. Tutors will review course material, help complete homework, prepare for quizzes and exams, and also when helpful, provide the student with practice questions to ensure he or she has mastered the concept.
